Recently in June 2025, a tragic firebombing attack in Boulder, Colorado, left 12 people injured. The suspect, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, had previously attempted to purchase a handgun on November 22, 2024, at Scheels All Sports in Colorado Springs. However, his application was denied by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) based on information from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).

The CBI’s InstaCheck system successfully identified red flags in Soliman’s application, leading to the denial of his firearm purchase. Furthermore, when Soliman applied for a concealed handgun permit on December 30, 2024, the application was also denied, triggering an electronic notification to federal immigration authorities.
While the background check system effectively prevented Soliman from legally obtaining a firearm, he resorted to using Molotov cocktails in the attack. Authorities discovered 16 unused Molotov cocktails near Soliman, who admitted to planning the attack for a year.
